Type in context Photos

With the chosen theming of the project based around Crete in Greece, the aim was to find an array of typography which is interesting and unusual in the context, with also looking for the similarities. Within the first couple of days of being in Crete, it was apparent that by just walking along the seafront that the common type of typography was handwritten signs painted on wood.
The most interesting hand painted sign, was the one shown above, it uses an array of typefaces and illustration to advertise the cafe. The typography is effective as it portrays a handmade connotation to the cafe, with also being aesthetically pleasing, with the use of colour and illustration, to which will get a passerbys attention.
Another example of interesting typography which was found in Crete was a more obscure finding, of a name of a greek lemonade. The typography is interesting as the letterforms have different qualities, with the first letter resembling a geometric shape of which could also be a bracket, with the other letterforms being more curved. The type is effective as it looks playful and interesting to the eye, of which may stand out on a shelf compared to competitors such as Fanta lemon.

Another example of a common finding of the typography in Greece, was the stereotypical Greek font, of which is displayed on a shops sign above. This typeface is well recognised by tourists as being Greek, therefore it is most commonly used to highlight the origin of the product/service that is being advertised.
