The idea for the publication, with having the niche focus on kirkgate market established, was to celebrate the use of hand processes in the making of the signs. The main content for the publication was the mixture of the images from kirkgate market and reproductions of the interesting hand made signs. The experiments made in result were testing the reproduction methods, with the placement in the publication. I experimented with the publication with testing the layout with printing out some sample pages and then finding ways to incorporate the methods. With the 'sharpie sign' I recreated it by using hand sharpie type, with using a coloured card, of which was folded in order to be unfolded in the publication to resemble the sign of which is found in the market. Also, with the chalkboard sign seen at the market, I wanted to create this method as it is another way to create a sign handmade, so to do this I used adhesive chalk board and chalk markers. These experiments worked well at displaying how the handmade methods are basic yet have personality, compared to the modern day equivalent of using vinyl. However, these experimentation didn't work as because the types of signs are completely different, binding them together would almost suggest they are the same, not creating a cohesive publication. Also, the idea of which stock to use was proving difficult, for the use of the rest of the images.
With the style of publication proving not to be quite working and with feedback, the format was reconsidered.
the format idea was changed to having the idea of the publication not being bound as the methods are all separate and hold different conventions yet are still tied in with the fact they are in the same place being kirkgate market. The loose parts of the publication would be photographs, with having writing on the back with observations from the place. With the different methods of making a sign, it was established that to incorporate these elements, they could come with the photos, with being almost souvenir type art, as the poster forms you could hang on your wall if you wanted to as a consumer. The photos and posters would be 'bound' by either having a box or another way such as using a belly band.
for this idea I need to figure out what type of box/bellyband. Perhaps looking at the bags used at the market and incorporating this. The box idea represents celebration, of which is the main focus of this publication, with incorporating the photos as a way of displaying and appreciating the art forms, whilst also if it is enclosed represents the preservation of the art form which is considered to be dying. It will also create a juxtaposition of the box and the posters included which are handmade looking.
