Typesetting: rules, theories and practical uses

composition of text/arrangements of letters
typography 3 elements: the word, letter & line
helvetica: film about typeface

indesign: best for setting type

character box; kerning, leading, tracking

hierarchy- type size/weight/colour
alignment- shape of body text, left aligned is easiest
paragraphed- indented/ full line break
leading- -(squished), automatic, + leading
tracking- -40(letters touching), 0, +40
kerning- bringing gaps in
hidden characters- how text is formatted in characters
line length- efficient reading depending on line length, best is 8-12 words p line
widows and orphans- lines or words left hanging or separated from text - use tracking/line spacing to remove
dashes and spaces- hyphen used for word division, en dash is used to indicate range, distance and time - read as to, em dash is more of a pause
rivers- gaps in typesetting, appear to run through a paragraph
