Contrast of saturation
Contrast of saturation refers to the contrast between the pure, intense and dull colours within a hue. It looks at the degree of purity within a colour. Saturation is controlled by using tints, shades, tones, or by mixing a colour with its direct complement. From a perceptual point of view saturation influences the grade of purity or vividness of a colour/image. A desaturated image is said to be dull, less colourful or washed out but can also make the impression of being softer. Within the denim, there were many different shades that were found, of which when placed together show the different saturations within the blue. Taking the photos of the denim in different lighting created different saturations, with natural lighting shadows making the denim’s blue more intense, but with the natural shadows, the jacket became more dull.
