The first idea with approaching the brief aims to take the linked theme of gifts with the objects chosen to document the images in an innovative way by creating wrapping paper made out of the images of the objects, which then will be used to wrap the objects, almost creating 2 images in one. With this ambitious approach, a narrative has been created by sequencing the images, placing the objects in a line according to the oldest gift to the most recent. With researching products related to gift giving and wanting to create a innovative publication, the images have been curated into a gift tag shaped publication, that will be bound by creating a hole at the top and threaded by ribbon, representing the the gift giving theme. This idea was chosen to develop as the idea is stronger, with having an innovative approach to the publication design and with feedback also suggesting ways to modify such as having the sequence change from the wrapped gifts to the unwrapped, then showing the unwrapped paper at the end, of which will show the cycle of gift giving in an effective way.
The idea behind the 2nd publication is to approach the use of the wrapped object images by using a different gift giving product, a greetings card. With looking at different publications and different products that would relate to the theming of gifts, the idea of a continuous concertina greetings card was thought of. The constinitina uses the sequenced wrapped images, of which correlate to the greetings found in the card. For example, the swedish flag was bought in sweden, of which the trip was an 18th birthday gift, so the greeting corresponded in the card translates this. This approach was discarded due to the unprofessionalism finish the idea would have with the amount of pictures used for the concertina, also the publication style isn’t innovative in its style.
The third idea for the publication is having the theming of the gifts presented in a less direct way of having a product that relates, and instead using the concept of wrapping, in order to create the publication. The idea is to use the images created and fold the card like stock in different ways for each image, partly showing the main centred imaged, binded in the same place. This idea incorporates the theme of gifts, developing the idea of wrapping, which then wraps the image again, creating a cycle of wrapping for the publication. This idea was discarded due to the prospect of the final outcome having to be perfectly folded, in which wouldn’t have visually looked polished. Also, to enhance the design coloured stock would look best however the images don’t translate well onto the stock.
With having collated the groups favourite and most visually exciting pages from our individual zines as there wasn’t a clear theme when first approached, we each responded differently to the same content to find a way to link the designs, in which created different interesting outcomes as a result.
One design of which was created in response to the material the group collectively chose was a ‘neon’ designed zine. With the material the group chose together, some pages had distinctive features of which reminded myself of neon signs of which would be found in establishments, such as bars. So the zine’s theme is neon, where all the designs are changed into black and white and the most interesting or eye catching element on the page is then in a neon colour. This idea was discarded due to it perhaps being too dull for the zine because of the use of the black and white.
For a different design the content was used to create a theme of blue. With all the designs not linking using a simple idea of having them all the same colour would link them. The designs use two different shades of blue, with one being a lighter shade, almost turquoise to give more interest to the zine. This zine was chosen when having a crit with the rest of the group members because of the simplicity of the theme and the execution working well, however was not chosen to develop into the final publication due to the lack of room for development.
For the third design it was inspired by one of the pages from the colllated zine with the words ‘reduced content’. for the zine the word ‘reduced content’ was used as a rule to link the designs together by reducing the size of the images on each page, to which results in having a small image on the back cover compared to the original size image on the front cover. This creates an interesting outcome, with the layout different throughout the zine due to this rule. This idea was discarded due to the simplicity of the idea.
With development of the body gif made as research, the first idea for the publication is creating a flipbook for the gif. The idea aims to create a simple yet effective approach of displaying the response of the theme flesh, in which was formed from the initial uncomfortable images. The idea was discarded due to the simplicity of the idea, not pushing the boundaries of publication. Also, the publication requires text and a flip book wouldn’t be as effective with the use of text.
The second idea for the publication is taking the initial uncomfortable images found that happened to all include raw meat, and use this to form the basis of the publication, exploring the theme of flesh, interpreting it in a different way from the first idea. The images have been used as the basis of the publication, with experimenting with the idea of how certain parts of an image can make it uncomfortable, in this instance the raw meat added to the rest of the image makes it uncomfortable. So to experiment with this idea, the meat has been cut out of the images and used to form a sliding mechanism, which tests how by taking away the meat it makes the image look ‘normal’ and innocence in a sense. The text used is from poems of which mention the word flesh, which again just the word makes the raw meat even more uncomfortable. This idea was discarded due to the practicality problem of how this idea would form into a publication because of the loose bits of paper acting as the mechanism.
The third idea for the publication is interpreting the word flesh in a different way by using the idea of testing the innocence of a subject and showing the reality. The publication is a interpretation of a children’s alphabet book, in which primarily uses cute pictures of animals in order to help children learn the alphabet. However, this publication makes the book uncomfortable with the use of the pictures of the reality of these animals, with problems of hunting, which has lead to some endangered species. The book uses the format of the alphabet and then uses this to spell out the problem with the uncomfortable image, which also plays with the innocence of children. This idea was discarded due to the format being too conformable.
